BIOpolymers from agri-food waste digestates for SMART release bioFERTilisers BIOSMARTFERT 12/10/2023-28/02/2026
The BIOSMARTFERT Project concludes with an event dedicated to presenting its results and future perspectives for smarter and more environmentally friendly agriculture.
Project Objective:
BIOSMARTFERT has developed a new generation of controlled release biofertilizers(SMART Release Fertilisers – SRF), obtained from digestate of agri-food waste coated with biodegradable biopolymers such as polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA). This innovation fully embraces the principles of the circular economy, transforming agri-food waste into high-value resources for sustainable agriculture.
During the meeting, the project partners (CNR-IRET, CNR-IPCF, UNIPI, UNICAMPANIA) will present results related to the following activities:
–Production of volatile fatty acids (VFA) through dark fermentation processes
–Production of polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA) from VFA using photosynthetic microorganisms
–Extraction and purification of PHA through green chemistry processes based on aqueous solutions, aimed at producing a material for digestate encapsulation
–Agronomic trials to evaluate SRF properties
–Mathematical modelling to estimate SRF yield and optimize the performance of the biological processes involved
–Environmental sustainability analysis (LCA) and economic feasibility assessment
