MONTI FLAVIO
Position: RICERCATORE
Type: T.D.
Location: Lecce
Research Lines: Biodiversity, Climate Change, Conservation, Sustainable management
Flavio Monti obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in Natural Sciences from the University of Rome “Sapienza” and a Master’s Degree in Management and Conservation of Natural Heritage from the University of Siena. In 2015, he earned a PhD in Evolutionary Biology and Ecology through a joint degree from the Université de Montpellier (France) and the University of Ferrara (Italy), along with the certification of “Doctor Europaeus.” He continued his academic career as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the University of Siena. Since 2023, he has been a Researcher at CNR-IRET.
His interests span from ornithology to applied research in environmental science and human-wildlife conflict management, focusing on the proper conservation of species and habitats. He is actively involved in national and international research programs on the conservation of migratory birds (mainly raptors), using GPS tracking data to study their movement patterns and spatial ecology. Additionally, he has experience in population genetics and phylogeographic studies on target species of conservation concern. Since 2006, he has contributed to the Osprey reintroduction project in Italy, playing a key role in its historic return as a breeding species in the country after more than 40 years of extinction.
Throughout his career, he has gained professional experience in the industrial sector, specializing in the development and production of remote sensing and positioning technologies used for studying and monitoring wildlife and environmental parameters. His work, conducted in collaboration with private companies, includes satellite telemetry, GPS/GSM devices, motion and environmental sensors, and radar instrumentation.
In parallel, Flavio has served as Head of the Scientific and Technical Network of MedWet – The Mediterranean Wetlands Initiative, a regional initiative operating under the aegis of the Ramsar Convention. In this role, he has been actively involved in the development and coordination of interdisciplinary research teams through international networking, cross-border cooperation, and participatory governance processes on issues related to the sustainable use of natural resources, ecosystem management and restoration, and the mitigation of the effects of climate and environmental change, with a focus on Mediterranean wetlands.
He has also managed and implemented international projects on behalf of universities, international organizations, NGOs, and public administrations. He has conducted numerous field missions across Europe, North Africa, and Latin America.
