Urban soil sealing and land consumption pose growing challenges to the sustainability of urban environments, compromising important soil functions and ecosystem services, including microclimate regulation, water management and biodiversity support. The REUSESoilTribes project – Reclaiming Urban Sealed Soils within SoilTribes EU project – aims to make scientific knowledge about sealed urban soils accessible and actionable, both in educational settings and in local decision-making and policy processes.
Building on the experience of the REUSES project, the initiative promotes an integrated approach to enhancing the value of soil as a key resource for urban resilience through two complementary areas of intervention.
-
Education and awareness-raising: development of educational tools for teachers and students, including practical activities, outdoor learning experiences, observation sheets and educational materials, to promote soil literacy and understanding of soil ecosystem services.
-
Support for public policies: development of information materials, scientific evidence, case studies and recommendations to help local authorities and policymakers understand the benefits of removing impervious surfaces (de-sealing) and support climate change adaptation planning.
By bridging research, education and territorial governance, REUSESoilTribes aims to raise awareness of the value of urban soils and promote concrete actions to restore their ecological functions, contributing to more sustainable and resilient cities.
