The laboratory of CHN/CHNS-O Elemental Analysis and Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy is dedicated to the determination of elemental composition and the analysis of major and trace elements in a wide range of matrices, including soil, plant tissues (leaves, stems, and other organs), microbial communities (both in pure cultures and in association with other organisms, such as cyanobacteria and biocrusts), and organic-containing materials, including plastics, microplastics, and carbon-based materials.
The determination of elemental content is carried out using combustion-based elemental analyzers, which enable automated quantification of elements through the analysis of gases generated by controlled sample combustion. The analysis is based on controlled sample combustion, which converts the matrix into simple gaseous compounds that are subsequently separated and quantified, allowing accurate determination of elemental composition.
The laboratory also performs the determination of metallic elements by atomic absorption spectrophotometry (AAS) on suitably prepared samples.
