The Saproxylic Habitat Network (SHN) was developed in the Eastern Cansiglio Forest as part of the Life SPAN project. It is a network of “senescence areas” – in the project called Saproxylic Habitat Sites (SHS) – designed to encourage the movement and dispersal of various saproxylic species in the surrounding areas, with an integrative and non-segregative approach to conservation practices. The SHS act as nodes in a network which, together with habitat trees, allows the movement and recolonisation of territories abandoned in the past due to forest management practices. Within each individual SHS, “pro-senescence” interventions have been carried out, aimed at accelerating the process of habitat tree formation and increasing the quantity and differentiation of deadwood on the ground to create key structures for the nesting and growth of saproxylic organisms.
