ICOS atmospheric station of Lampedus is officially a Class I site

The ENEA Climate Observatory of Lampedusa has received the highest European certification (Class 1) from the European Integrated Carbon Observation System network, coordinated in Italy by the National Research Council of Italy, in recognition of the quality and reliability of the atmospheric data it provides. It is the first Italian scientific station of its kind to receive this certification, an achievement made possible in part through the acquisition of advanced instrumentation under the PRO-ICOS-Med infrastructure project.

“With the upgrade to Class 1, the Lampedusa atmospheric site further strengthens the strategic role it plays within the European ICOS climate observation network and for the entire Italian scientific community engaged in climate change research,” said Tatiana Di Iorio, scientific coordinator of the ICOS Atmospheric Observatory and researcher at ENEA’s Department for Sustainability.

“As ICOS Italy,” said Carlo Calfapietra, National Focal Point of the Italian network and Director of the Institute of Research on Terrestrial Ecosystems, “we are extremely proud to have reached this milestone by adding a Class 1 atmospheric station to the network. The Observatory is the only European site integrating all three environmental components: sea, land, and atmosphere. The island of Lampedusa represents an exceptionally valuable location for analyzing greenhouse gas exchanges because of its unique geographical position. A historic observatory such as Lampedusa is therefore a source of great pride, both for the Italian network and for the wider European network.”

Thanks to its location in the central Mediterranean, the ENEA Climate Observatory of Lampedusa provides a unique vantage point for monitoring the evolution of the main greenhouse gases, particularly carbon dioxide and methane, and for studying exchanges between the atmosphere, the sea, and the land. It is the only station in the entire European network that simultaneously collects data on all three environmental domains. In addition to the Atmospheric Observatory, Lampedusa also hosts the Terrestrial Ecosystem Observatory, dedicated to measuring CO₂ fluxes between vegetation and the atmosphere, and the Oceanographic Observatory, a high-tech buoy located five kilometers offshore and equipped with advanced sensor systems. The buoy provides the scientific community with meteorological data as well as measurements of temperature, pressure, salinity, pH, chlorophyll, and dissolved organic matter in seawater.

There are currently 19 ICOS Class 1 atmospheric stations across Europe. These stations are distinguished by their use of advanced instrumentation capable of providing continuous, highly accurate measurements of numerous atmospheric and environmental variables related to the carbon cycle. Achieving Class 1 status requires passing rigorous assessments of the quality, reliability, and long-term continuity of the data produced.
